Capture controls and recovery
Pause, resume, finish, and recover Auto Capture when the screen or Mac changes.
Updated November 2, 2026
This page describes the Auto Capture run controls and how a run recovers when the display setup changes or the Mac locks or sleeps.
Pause and resume
Run controls appear in three places: the Temposhot window, the capture overlay, and the floating toolbar. The floating toolbar stays visible while another app is in front. It shows the source, the latest frame, the progress, and the controls.
The Capture menu offers the same actions from the menu bar: Start Auto Capture with Shift+Command+R and Finish Capture with Command+..
Pause capture holds the capture loop. Resume capture continues the same session, and frames saved before the pause stay in it.
| Stop condition | Effect of a pause |
|---|---|
| Screenshots | The frame count resumes where it stopped |
| Duration | Paused time is not counted toward the duration |
| End time | The session still ends at the selected clock time |
Finish or stop
| Control | Where | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Finish capture | Floating toolbar | Ends the run immediately and keeps saved frames |
| Stop capture | Temposhot window or capture overlay | Pauses the run and asks Do you want to stop the automation? |
After Stop capture, select Yes to end the run or No to return to it.
Start a new run over existing frames
If the screenshot pane already holds frames, starting a new run can ask Discard the current frames and start fresh? Select Start Fresh to clear the pane and begin, or Cancel to keep the current frames on screen. The cleared frames stay in Capture History.
Recover after display changes
Connecting or disconnecting a display, rotating it, or changing its scaling can make the current source invalid.
Review the dialog
Display Configuration Changed opens and pauses the run.
Choose a display
Select the display that should replace the original one.
Continue or stop
Select Continue with Selected Display to resume. Select Stop Capture if the original framing cannot be reproduced.
For a full-display capture, Temposhot can pick another available display on its own. A custom area always asks for confirmation, because its coordinates belong to the original display.
Recover after lock or sleep
When macOS locks the screen or goes to sleep, Auto Capture pauses its capture stream. After unlock or wake, Temposhot restores the stream and continues. A run that you paused by hand stays paused.
If the stream does not come back, select Resume capture to try again.
Quit during a run
Quitting Temposhot while a run is active opens Capture in progress. Select Keep Capturing to stay in the run, or Quit Temposhot to stop it. Frames saved before quitting remain available in Capture History.
