How to check the resolution of a screenshot

    1. Add screenshots

Drop one or more PNG, JPG, WebP or HEIC images, or paste one with Command-V.

    2. Read the pixel size

Each card shows width × height in pixels, the aspect ratio and the megapixels.

    3. Check DPI and scale

Stored DPI comes from the file header. A value of 144 or 216 suggests a @2x or @3x Retina capture.

    4. Compare points and print size

The tables convert the pixels to points at @1x, @2x and @3x, and to inches and centimeters at 300 and 150 DPI.

What does a screenshot's resolution tell you?

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. On a Mac with a Retina display, one point on screen is drawn with 2 × 2 pixels, so a window that looks 800 points wide is 1600 pixels wide in the screenshot.

DPI is stored in the file header and only sets the print size. macOS saves Retina screenshots with 144 DPI; many other apps leave the value out. Changing the DPI never changes the pixels.

    Frequently asked questions

Where does the DPI value come from?

From the PNG pHYs chunk, the JPEG JFIF header or the EXIF resolution tags. When none of these is present, the card shows that no DPI is stored.

How is the Retina scale found?

A stored DPI of 144 suggests @2x and 216 suggests @3x. Without a stored DPI, compare the sizes in points with the screen size you expect.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. The tool reads the size and the header in your browser. The images stay on your device.

Can I check several screenshots at once?

Yes. Each image gets its own card. Remove a card with its remove button.

Why does the print size change with DPI?

Print size is pixels divided by DPI. 3000 pixels at 300 DPI print 10 inches wide; at 150 DPI they print 20 inches wide.
