What to know about GIF frames

Each GIF frame holds at most 256 colors. Screenshots with flat colors look clean; photos and gradients show visible banding.

Every image becomes one frame of the same size. The width you pick is never larger than the first image, and the height follows the first image's shape.

GIF files grow with every frame. For more than a few dozen images or long clips, an MP4 from Images to Video is smaller and sharper.

Frequently asked questions

How short can a frame be?

The custom value accepts 0.04 to 10 seconds per frame. Many viewers slow down frames shorter than 0.02 s, so the presets start at 0.1 s.

Can the GIF have a transparent background?

Yes. Choose Transparent. Pixels that are mostly transparent in your images stay transparent in the GIF.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The GIF is encoded in your browser and the images stay on your device.

Why is my GIF large?

GIF compression is weak for photos. Pick a smaller width, fewer frames, or make an MP4 instead.

How many frames can a GIF have?

Up to 100 images, as long as width × height × frames stays under 30 million pixels.
