Privacy Blur

What privacy blur is, how it differs from redaction, and how to blur sensitive information in screenshots.

Privacy blur is the practice of obscuring sensitive parts of an image, such as names, email addresses, account numbers, faces or access tokens, before the image is shared. An editor applies a blur or pixelation filter to a selected region and writes the result into the exported pixels.

The goal is to keep the screenshot useful while removing what the viewer should not see. A blurred region shows that something was there, keeps the layout readable, and hides the details. Only the exported file counts: if an editor keeps the blur as a separate layer and the original file is shared, the content is still visible.

Privacy blur vs redaction

Redaction replaces a region with an opaque shape, so no information from the original pixels remains. Blur averages nearby pixels, and pixelation replaces blocks with their average color. A light blur or coarse pixelation over short, predictable text can sometimes be reversed or guessed, especially when the font and size are known. For secrets, redaction is the safer choice.

Where privacy blur is used

  • Bug reports and support tickets that show real customer accounts.
  • Tutorials and documentation recorded on a working machine.
  • Social posts and slides that show chat threads or dashboards.
  • Screen recordings and timelapses where notifications appear.

How to blur effectively

  • Use a solid box for passwords, keys, card numbers and ID numbers.
  • Use strong blur over a region larger than the text, so letter shapes are not recognizable.
  • Check the whole image, including tabs, the menu bar and notification banners.
  • Export a flattened image or PDF and check the exported file, not the editor view.

Common mistakes with privacy blur

  • Blurring a single word with a small radius.
  • Sharing the original file instead of the edited export.
  • Missing the same value in a second place, such as a page title or URL.
  • Forgetting file names and image metadata.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?

Temposhot Documents has a Blur tool (B, Pro), and exported PDF or image pages contain the blurred result. A ZIP of annotated frames warns that it contains the original unedited files. See annotations and framing.

Common questions

Can blurred text be recovered?

Sometimes. Weak blur or pixelation over short text has been reversed in published research and demos. Use an opaque box for anything secret.

Does blurring change the original screenshot?

In Temposhot, no. The captured frames stay unchanged, and the blur appears in exported document pages.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?

Temposhot captures a screen, window or area on a timer and exports the set as a PDF, images, ZIP or MP4. The free browser tools fix single images.
