Cengage eTextbooks open in a browser reader by default, which needs a connection. Offline reading runs through Cengage's mobile reading app, Cengage Read. Plan a day ahead of a trip or a week with weak Wi-Fi, because large books take time to download and course work stays online.
What Cengage Read includes
Cengage Read is the mobile app for reading Cengage eTextbooks on a phone or tablet. For titles that support it, the app downloads the book so you can read without a connection. Features available in the app can include:
- Offline reading of downloaded books.
- Highlights and notes that sync to your account when you reconnect.
- Search inside the downloaded book.
- Text-to-speech for listening to the text.
Feature support varies by title and by how you got access, whether through a course, a direct purchase or rental, or a subscription. Cengage's help center lists what applies to your book.
Prepare the eBook for offline reading
Install and sign in
Install Cengage Read from your device's app store. Sign in with the same Cengage account you use in the browser.
Download the book
Open your library, select the title and choose the download option. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.
Check the access date
Note the access end date shown in your Cengage account. Offline copies stop working when access ends.
Test offline
Turn on airplane mode, open the book and read one chapter, including pages with figures and tables.
Plan around browser-only course features
Course activities usually stay in the browser even when the book is downloaded. Homework, quizzes, graded assignments, videos and interactive simulations need a connection and often a specific course link from your instructor.
Before going offline, finish or schedule any graded work. Write the due dates next to the chapters you plan to read, so offline reading time does not collide with deadlines.
Print your notes and highlights when the browser reader supports it
Your own notes and highlights are worth keeping outside the app. When the browser reader offers a print or export option for notes, use it to save them as a PDF through the macOS print dialog. Choose PDF in the dialog and Save as PDF.
If no option appears for your title, the notes stay in your Cengage account. Check again before access ends.
Why the offline book is not a PDF
Offline downloads are stored inside Cengage Read in a protected format. They open only in the app, only while your access is active, and they do not show up as a PDF in Files or Finder.
This is how most licensed etextbooks work. Offline access is a reading convenience, not a file you own. The post on offline etextbook access vs a downloadable PDF explains the difference in more detail.
Troubleshooting
- No download option. The title may not support offline reading. Check Cengage's help pages for your book.
- Download fails partway. Free up storage on the device and retry on a stable connection.
- Book will not open offline. Open it once online to refresh access, then test again.
- Notes missing on the laptop. Open Cengage Read on Wi-Fi so it can sync.
- Book vanished from the library. Access may have ended. Check the end date in your account.
If you need notes outside Cengage
Start with the reader's own print or export option for notes. If none exists, your typed notes can be recreated in your own study document, since they are your work.
The notes panel can also be captured as screenshots for personal study. Temposhot captures only what is visible on screen and cannot capture content that an app or browser blocks.
In Temposhot, open Auto Capture, select the browser window on the Windows tab, and record Page Down or Down Arrow under Key press so the notes list scrolls between frames. The automated capture guide explains each setting. Export PDF for a searchable file.
