Can I Keep an eTextbook After My Course or Access Period Ends?
An offline copy usually expires with the license. Check your access type, export your own notes, and request an approved format before the end date.

Most etextbooks stop opening when your access period ends, including copies you downloaded for offline reading. What you can keep depends on the type of access you have and on what you save before the end date. Your own notes are the main thing worth saving, and the book itself usually needs a separate purchase.
Identify the type of access you have
Open your account on the platform and find the access details for each title. They usually fall into one of these types:
- Rental: access for a fixed period from activation.
- Course access: provided through an instructor's course and tied to the course dates.
- Institution access: provided by your library or university while its license lasts.
- Subscription: access while you keep paying.
- Purchase: a license with a longer or open-ended term, still inside the reader.
- DRM-free file: a PDF or EPUB you downloaded and hold yourself.
Only the last type is a file you keep regardless of the platform. Write down the end date shown for each of the others.
Offline does not mean permanent
Offline downloads are a reading convenience. The reader app checks your license from time to time, and when the license ends, the downloaded copy stops opening. Staying offline does not keep it alive; the app checks again when it next connects or when the license period passes.
The files the app stores on your Mac are encrypted for that app. They are not a backup of the book.
"Lifetime access" still needs a definition
Some offers promise lifetime or permanent access. Read the terms for what that means:
- Whose lifetime: yours, the edition's, or the platform's.
- Whether access continues if the platform stops selling the title.
- Whether you can read offline or only online.
- Whether you can export notes.
Even a lifetime license is usually access in the reader, not a file. Save the purchase receipt and the terms page as a PDF so you can refer to them later.
What to save before the end date
Focus on material that is yours or that the license lets you keep:
- Notes and highlights. Use the reader's export or print option. See export online textbook highlights and notes.
- Pages within the print allowance. Many titles allow printing a set number of pages. Use the allowance shown in your account for the chapters you will revisit.
- Citation details. Title, edition, ISBN, authors and page numbers for anything you quoted in assignments.
- Your submitted work. Homework and quiz results from the course platform, where it offers a download.
What not to do
Temposhot captures only what is visible on screen and cannot capture content that a reader app blocks. It is meant for material you have the right to keep, such as your notes view or permitted pages, for personal use.
If you still need the book later
- Extend or buy. Many platforms offer an extension or a purchase option before the end date.
- Print edition. A used print copy is often the cheapest way to keep a textbook for years.
- DRM-free edition. Some publishers and open textbook projects offer files you can keep.
- Library. Your library may hold a print or ebook copy you can borrow when needed.
- Instructor. For a later course that builds on the same book, ask whether a newer edition replaces it.
Checklist before access ends
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Start of term | Note the end date for every title |
| After each unit | Export notes and highlights |
| One month before | Decide whether to extend, buy or switch to print |
| Two weeks before | Print permitted pages and save citation details |
| Final week | Do a last notes export and check the files open outside the reader |
FAQ
Will my downloaded copy keep working if I never go online?
No. The app checks the license period, and the copy stops opening when it ends.
Do my notes disappear when access ends?
On some platforms they stay in your account, on others they do not. Export them to be sure.
Can I screenshot the pages I printed within the allowance?
You already have those pages as printed output. Keep them for personal use under the same terms.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Temposhot turns your notes view and other permitted material into a searchable PDF that stays on your Mac. Download Temposhot, then read the export formats guide.
