Screenshot API
What a screenshot API is, how it works, and when to use one for programmatic capture.
A screenshot API is a web service that takes a URL and capture options in an HTTP request, loads the page in a browser on its own servers, and returns the result as an image or PDF. It lets an application request screenshots from code without installing or running browsers itself.
Most services authenticate requests with an API key and bill by the number of captures. Feature sets, limits and prices differ between providers and change over time, so compare them on each provider's documentation.
How screenshot APIs work
- The client sends a request with the URL and options such as viewport width and height, full-page or viewport area, device scale factor, format, delay and wait condition.
- The service opens the URL in a headless browser, often driven by Playwright or Puppeteer.
- It waits for the page, applies options such as hiding cookie banners or ads, and captures.
- It returns the image directly, or stores it and returns a link.
Where screenshot APIs are used
- Link preview and social card images generated on demand.
- Thumbnails of user-submitted URLs in directories or CMS tools.
- Archived copies of pages for records.
- Scheduled checks that compare pages over time.
Hosted vs self-hosted
A hosted API removes browser maintenance, scaling and updates. In exchange, URLs and images pass through a third party, and pages load from the provider's network and region, which can change content behind logins, VPNs or geo rules. Self-hosting with Playwright or Puppeteer keeps data in your infrastructure but requires running browsers, queues and retries.
Common mistakes with screenshot APIs
- Capturing pages that require a login without passing session data.
- Not setting a wait condition, which returns half-loaded pages.
- Sending private or internal URLs to a third-party service.
- Ignoring rate limits and timeouts in high-volume jobs.
Taking the same screenshots again and again?
Temposhot Website Capture loads the URLs you enter in managed local browsers on your Mac and saves files locally. It runs from the app, not as an HTTP service. See website screenshot automation.
Common questions
Do I need to code to use a screenshot API?
Yes, at least a request from a script or an automation tool.
Can a screenshot API capture pages behind a login?
Some accept cookies or headers for that. Check the provider's documentation and the site's terms.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?
Temposhot captures a screen, window or area on a timer and exports the set as a PDF, images, ZIP or MP4. The free browser tools fix single images.
