Dark Mode Screenshot

Why dark mode screenshots matter, how to capture both light and dark variants, and readability considerations.

A dark mode screenshot shows an interface in its dark appearance: light text and controls on dark backgrounds. On macOS the appearance is set in System Settings, under Appearance, with the options Light, Dark and Auto. Auto switches between the two during the day.

Native apps usually follow the system setting, though many also have their own theme option. Websites detect the preference with the CSS media feature prefers-color-scheme, defined in Media Queries Level 5. A site without dark styles shows its light design in both modes, so a dark system setting does not guarantee a dark page.

Why dark mode screenshots matter

Many people run their Mac or phone in dark mode. Documentation that only shows light screens can confuse them, because colors, borders and icons differ. Product pages and store listings often show both variants to signal that the app supports them.

Capturing both modes

  1. Choose the screens to capture and fix the window size and position.
  2. Set the appearance to Light and capture the full set.
  3. Switch to Dark, confirm the target app has changed, and capture the same set again.
  4. Name files with a light or dark suffix so pairs stay together.

Temposhot records the screen as it appears. Run the same Auto Capture setup twice, once per appearance. The Custom Area source reopens on the saved area, so both sets line up.

Dark mode and readability

Thin light text on a dark background loses weight when an image is scaled down. Large flat dark areas compress well as PNG. JPEG at low quality can show banding in dark gradients and halos around light text, so check a zoomed crop. For sharp text, export with PNG Export (Lossless).

Common mistakes

  • Mixing light and dark screenshots in one guide.
  • Switching the system appearance while an app keeps its own theme setting.
  • Leaving Auto appearance on during a long capture, so it changes mid-run.
  • Placing dark screenshots on a dark page without a border, which hides the edges.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?

Save the setup as a preset and run it for each appearance. See screenshot automation on Mac.

Common questions

Why does a website stay light when my Mac is dark?

The site may have no dark styles, or it may use its own theme toggle instead of the system preference. Check the site's settings before capture.

Which format is best for dark screenshots?

PNG keeps text edges exact. Use JPG at a high quality setting when file size matters.
