How to Save News Articles as Clean PDFs on Mac (Without the Clutter)
Save news articles as clean, ad-free, searchable PDFs on your Mac using Safari Reader Mode and automated screenshots. Archive journalism before it disappears behind paywalls.

News pages change, move behind paywalls or disappear when a site is redesigned. A PDF on your own Mac keeps the article readable years later. The cleanest result usually comes from the browser itself, with screenshots as the fallback when the article layout matters or printing breaks.
Check browser Save as PDF first
Open the article and press Command+P. Scroll through the print preview before saving.
Many news sites ship a print stylesheet that removes menus, ads and comment sections. When the preview shows the headline, byline, date, body and images in order, choose Save as PDF and stop there. The file has selectable text and is usually small.
Signs that the print route will not work well:
- the preview shows only the first screen of the article
- photos appear as empty boxes
- a cookie or subscription overlay covers the text
- related-article blocks are mixed into the body
Use Safari Reader
Safari Reader strips a page down to the article text and main images. Open the article in Safari and choose View, then Show Reader, or press Shift+Command+R. The Reader button also appears in the address field when Safari detects an article.
Reader removes ads, sidebars and autoplay video. You can change the font, text size and background color from the Reader menu before saving. With Reader open, press Command+P and save as PDF, and the file uses the Reader layout.
Reader does not appear on every page. Live blogs, photo galleries and interactive features often have no Reader version.
Method 1: short articles
For a typical article of 800 to 1,500 words:
Open Reader
Press Shift+Command+R in Safari.
Print to PDF
Press Command+P, then choose Save as PDF from the PDF menu.
Name the file
Use a pattern such as
2026-07-21 Outlet - Headline.pdf.
The result is a text PDF without clutter, usually under 1 MB for a text-only article.
Method 2: long articles
Long features with large photos, pull quotes and embedded charts often lose their layout in Reader. If the visual presentation matters, capture the article one screen at a time with Temposhot Auto Capture.
- Open the article in the browser and scroll to the headline.
- Press Command+1 to open Auto Capture.
- Set Stop condition to Screenshots and enter the number of screens the article needs. Add one or two extra.
- Set Interval to 1 second and record Page Down or Space as the Key press.
- Under Windows, select the browser window and select Start Capture. Click the browser during the 3-second countdown.
- In the results pane, uncheck duplicate frames at the end, then select PDF.
The PDF export adds OCR text, so the article stays searchable. Key press automation requires Temposhot Pro. The automated capture guide covers each setting.
Method 3: pages without Reader Mode
When neither Reader nor print gives a usable result:
- One full-page image. The Temposhot extension for Chrome scrolls the tab, stitches the screens locally and downloads one PNG. Cut it into page-sized parts with the Split Image and combine them with the Image to PDF.
- A screen sequence. Use Method 2 above.
- Several public articles at once. Paste the URLs into Website Capture, choose Full page and keep Block ads on. Export the session as PDF, with one page per article.
Website Capture loads pages in managed browsers that are not signed in to your subscriptions. For paywalled articles you subscribe to, use your own browser with Method 1 or 2.
Capture articles from news apps
Some publishers and aggregators offer a Mac app with no PDF export. Auto Capture works with any window, so the Method 2 steps apply. Choose the app window under Windows and use the key the app uses to move down or to the next page.
Some apps block screen capture. Temposhot cannot capture protected windows, and the result will be blank.
Organize the news archive
A consistent structure keeps a few hundred articles easy to find:
| Element | Example |
|---|---|
| Folder | News/2026/07 |
| File name | 2026-07-21 Outlet - Headline.pdf |
| Topic collection | Merge related articles with the Merge PDF |
| Large files | Shrink with the Compress PDF |
Because each PDF has a text layer, Spotlight can find articles by words in the body, not only by file name.
Improve article captures
- Close overlays first. Dismiss cookie, newsletter and subscription prompts before capturing.
- Widen the window. A wider window reduces line breaks and the number of screens.
- Hide the browser toolbar. Use a Custom Area source around the article column to leave out tabs and the address bar.
- Wait for images. Scroll the article once before starting so lazy-loaded photos are ready.
- Keep the URL. Add the source URL and date to the file name or a note so the citation stays with the file.
FAQ
Does Safari Reader remove ads?
Yes. Reader shows the article text and main images, without ads, menus or sidebars.
Can I save a paywalled article?
Only articles your subscription lets you read. Capture them in your own signed-in browser, keep them for personal use, and follow the publisher's terms.
Will the PDF be searchable?
A browser PDF keeps native text. A Temposhot screenshot PDF adds recognized text through OCR.
How do I save many articles at once?
Paste the public URLs into Website Capture and export the session as one PDF. The Website Capture quick start shows the setup.
Save the article
Open one article you want to keep, try Safari Reader with Shift+Command+R, and compare the print preview with the original page. Use the method that keeps everything you need.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Temposhot captures any visible window as screenshots and exports them as searchable PDFs on your Mac. See save screenshots as PDF on Mac or download the app.
