How to Save Social Media Posts & Forum Threads as PDFs on Mac

Save tweets, Reddit threads, Instagram posts, Hacker News discussions, and forum threads as clean, searchable PDFs on your Mac using automated screenshots.

Posts get deleted, accounts go private and forums shut down. A PDF on your Mac keeps a discussion readable after the original is gone. Threads are harder to save than articles, because replies load as you scroll and the browser's print view often cuts them off.

Choose the post or thread

Decide what the PDF must contain before capturing. The choice changes the method.

Expand the replies you need before starting. Most platforms collapse long branches behind "more replies" links, and a capture only records what is on screen.

Capture the thread

Browser print rarely works on social sites. Infinite scroll, sticky headers and app-style layouts produce a PDF with one screen of content or none. Screenshots of the thread as it scrolls are more reliable.

  1. Open and expand

Open the thread in your browser, expand the replies you want, and scroll back to the top.

  2. Set up Auto Capture

Press Command+1. Set Stop condition to Screenshots with a few more than the number of screens the thread needs. Set Interval to 1.5 seconds (1500 ms) so new replies load between frames.

  3. Add the scroll key

Record Page Down as the Key press. On keyboards without that key, press Fn and Down Arrow while recording.

  4. Pick the window and start

Under Windows, select the browser window, select Start Capture, and click the browser during the countdown.

  5. Export

Uncheck duplicate frames at the end, then select PDF in the results pane for a searchable file.

Key press automation requires Temposhot Pro. To limit frames to the thread column, use a Custom Area source drawn around it instead of the whole window.

Twitter and X threads

Open the first post of the thread so the author's connected replies appear below it. Viewing many posts may require signing in, so capture from your own browser rather than a URL list. Reply sections load as you scroll, which is why a 1.5-second interval helps. For a single post, one screenshot is often enough.

Reddit threads

Expand collapsed comment branches before capturing, since only visible comments are recorded. Sort the comments the way you want them saved, for example by top or by old. Public threads can also go through Website Capture with Full page, though only the comments loaded on first view will appear.

Instagram posts

A post is usually one image or a carousel plus a caption and comments. Open the post in its own page view, capture each carousel slide with Right Arrow as the key, and keep the caption in frame. Respect the photographer's rights: a saved copy is for your reference, not reposting.

Hacker News threads

Hacker News pages are plain HTML and load all comments of a page at once. That makes them a good fit for Website Capture: paste the thread URLs, choose Desktop and Full page, keep the wait on Load, and export the session as PDF. Very long threads can split across several pages, so add each page URL.

Traditional forums

Classic forums split a topic into numbered pages. Paste each page URL into Website Capture with Bulk insert in order, choose Full page, and export one PDF for the whole topic. If the forum requires a login to read, open each page in your own browser and capture it with Auto Capture and Page Down.

The batch capture post covers URL lists in detail.

Organize the archive

  • Folder per platform: Threads/Reddit, Threads/Forums.
  • File name with date, community and topic: 2026-08-25 r-woodworking - Finishing oak.pdf.
  • A text note with the source URL inside the folder.
  • Merge a topic's pages with the Merge PDF if they were saved separately.

Threads contain other people's names, photos and opinions. Saving a public thread for your own reference is common. Sharing it is a different act.

Also respect each platform's terms of service. Some prohibit automated collection, and private groups carry an expectation that posts stay inside the group. Temposhot captures only what is visible on your screen and cannot capture protected content.

Improve the capture

  1. Widen the window so long replies wrap less and need fewer frames.
  2. Hide side panels such as trending lists to keep the focus on the thread.
  3. Raise the interval to 2 seconds if replies are still loading when frames save.
  4. Stitch a short thread into one tall image with the Stitch Screenshots instead of a PDF.
  5. Check the last frames. The page stops scrolling at the end, and duplicate frames follow.

FAQ

Why does printing a thread to PDF show only one screen?

Social sites often place content in a scrolling panel instead of the page itself. The print engine renders only the visible part of that panel.

Can I save a thread without signing in?

Public pages on Hacker News, many forums and some Reddit threads load without an account, so Website Capture works. Platforms that require a login need your own browser and Auto Capture.

Are the PDFs searchable?

Yes. Temposhot PDF exports include OCR text, so names and phrases in the thread can be searched.

Save the thread

Open a thread you want to keep, expand its replies, and run Auto Capture with Page Down at a 1.5-second interval. Check the PDF for missing replies before closing the tab.

Working with pages you are allowed to save?

Temposhot captures windows and URL lists on your Mac and exports searchable PDFs. See save screenshots as PDF on Mac or download the app.
