Can I Move an Online eTextbook to GoodNotes or Acrobat?
Find out which textbook files can move to another app, why offline reader downloads cannot, and what official export to look for.

Handwriting notes on a textbook in GoodNotes, or marking it up in Acrobat, is a common study setup. Whether it works depends on one thing: do you have a file, or do you have access inside a reader app. Most online etextbooks are the second kind, and those cannot move to another app.
Start with the file you actually have
Check what you received when you bought or were given the book:
- A DRM-free PDF. Opens in any PDF app. You can move it.
- A DRM-free EPUB. Opens in ebook apps. Moving it to a PDF annotation app needs a conversion, which the license may or may not allow.
- Access in a reader app or browser. No file is provided. The book stays in that platform.
- Pages saved with the reader's PDF or print command. A PDF of selected pages, within the title's allowance.
If you are unsure, look at the order confirmation and your account. A downloadable file is always described as such.
Moving a textbook to GoodNotes
GoodNotes and similar apps import PDF files. A DRM-free PDF imports directly through the app's import option or the share sheet. Pages saved with the reader's own PDF command also import, as long as you keep them for personal study.
A book you read in a platform app cannot be imported, because there is no file to import. Your handwritten notes then need a separate notebook in GoodNotes, with page references to the book.
Opening a textbook in Preview or Adobe Acrobat
Preview and Acrobat open any standard PDF. A publisher PDF with security settings may block printing, copying or editing in those apps. Those settings reflect the license and should stay in place.
If an opened PDF shows pages that do not select or search, it contains page images. See why you cannot select text in a saved etextbook PDF for how to tell which case you have.
Moving a textbook to an e-reader
E-readers accept DRM-free EPUB and PDF files through their own transfer methods. Protected books from one platform do not open on another platform's device. Some platforms offer their own apps for e-ink tablets; check the platform's list of supported devices.
Fixed-layout textbooks are hard to read on small e-ink screens even when a file is available. A tablet usually works better.
Why copying the app's files does not work
Reader apps store downloaded books in their own encrypted format. The files open only in that app and only while your license is active. Copying them to another folder or app produces files nothing else can open, and attempting to decrypt them breaches the license terms.
Choose the output based on the task
| Task | Best route |
|---|---|
| Handwritten notes on pages | Reader's PDF command within the allowance, or a DRM-free edition |
| Typed notes and highlights | The reader's notes export |
| Reading on an e-reader | A DRM-free EPUB, or the platform's own device app |
| Full book in another app | Buy a DRM-free or print edition |
| Diagrams for a study sheet | Ask the instructor which figures you may reuse |
When screenshot capture is appropriate
Capture fits material you have the right to copy: open textbooks, your own notes view, lecture slides your instructor shares, or a short range where the terms allow personal copies. Check the platform's terms and the allowance shown in your account first.
Set up the source
In Temposhot, open Auto Capture and choose a Custom Area around the page, so toolbars stay out of the image.
Turn pages automatically
Apply the Kindle preset (20 screenshots, 500 ms, Right Arrow, 3 s countdown), select the area again, and set Screenshots to the page count.
Export a PDF
Choose PDF in the results pane. The file includes an OCR layer, so search works in GoodNotes or Acrobat.
Import
Share the PDF to GoodNotes or open it in Acrobat.
The capture presets guide explains each preset value, and searchable PDF explains the text layer.
FAQ
Can I convert a reader download to PDF?
No. Reader downloads are encrypted for that app, and converting them breaches the license.
Can I import pages from the reader's print command?
Yes, if you keep them for personal study within the allowance.
Why does my imported PDF not search?
It contains page images without a text layer. Add OCR with Screenshot to Searchable PDF.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Download Temposhot to turn permitted pages into a searchable PDF ready for your annotation app. The export formats guide explains each output.
