Official Download, Print to PDF, or Screenshot an eTextbook?
Choose the safest useful output for a digital textbook: official offline download, permitted PDF pages, notes export, or approved screenshots.

Students who want "the textbook as a PDF" usually need something narrower: reading on a train, a few pages for an open-book exam, or their own notes in one place. Each need has a matching output, and the official ones come first. Screenshots are the last option and only for material you are allowed to capture.
Compare the four options
| Option | What you get | Works outside the reader | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official offline download | The book inside the platform app | No | Ends with your access |
| Reader PDF or Print command | Selected pages as PDF or paper | Yes | Title-specific allowance |
| Notes export | Your highlights and notes | Yes | Quoted text may be shortened |
| Permitted screenshots | Images of visible pages | Yes | Only where terms allow it |
Allowances, offline periods and export features differ by platform and title. Read the figures shown in your own account before deciding.
Choose official offline download when you only need to read
If the goal is reading without Wi-Fi, the platform's own app is the complete answer. It keeps search, highlights, linked figures and the full book, all within the license.
Download the titles you need on a stable connection, then test them with Wi-Fi off. Open the app online once every few days so the license refreshes. The download is not a portable file, and that is fine for reading.
Choose the reader's PDF or Print command when portability is allowed
When you need pages outside the app, such as for printing or an annotation app, use the reader's own Save to PDF or Print command. Many publishers allow a set number of pages per title, and the reader shows how many remain.
Pick pages carefully, because the allowance often counts every page you output. On a Mac, the macOS print dialog's PDF menu saves the output as a file.
Choose notes export when the book is not the output you need
Often the thing worth keeping is your own work: highlights, typed notes and bookmarks. Most readers have a notes or notebook view, and many can export or print it. This preserves your study material after access ends without copying the book.
See export online textbook highlights and notes for a step-by-step method.
Choose screenshots only for permitted visual material
Screenshots fit a small set of cases: open textbooks, your own notes view, figures your instructor has cleared for a presentation, or pages within an allowance where the terms permit personal copies. Check the platform's terms first.
For a permitted page range, Temposhot's Kindle preset in Auto Capture is a fast starting point: 20 screenshots, a 500 ms interval, the Right Arrow key and a 3 s countdown. It works with any reader that turns pages with the Right Arrow key.

Test the first permitted result
Whatever route you choose, test a small output before committing:
Produce two or three pages
Save a short range with the reader's PDF command, or run Temposhot with Screenshots set to 3.
Open the file
Open it in Preview. Check that the pages are complete, readable and in order.
Test search
Press Command+F and search for a word on the page. A capture exported as PDF from Temposhot includes an OCR layer, so it should be found.
Adjust and continue
If text is small, zoom the reader. If pages repeat, raise the interval to 1 second.
The automated capture guide explains each Auto Capture setting, and searchable PDF explains the text layer.
Decision sequence
- Need to read offline only: use the official download.
- Need some pages outside the app: use the reader's PDF or Print command within the allowance.
- Need your own study work: export notes.
- Need the whole book outside the app: buy a print or DRM-free edition, or ask the library.
- Only after all of that, and only for permitted material: capture what is visible on screen.
FAQ
Is printing to PDF the same as downloading the book?
No. Printing outputs selected pages within an allowance. A download stays inside the app.
Why is my reader's print option missing?
The publisher may not allow printing for the title, or the allowance is used up.
Can screenshots replace a missing print option?
No. A missing print option reflects the license terms. Ask the library or publisher for an approved format.
