HEIC and PNG at a glance
| HEIC | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency | Possible in the format; iPhone photos have none | Yes |
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC), about half the size of a JPG of the same quality | Lossless, larger files |
| Typical use | Photos taken on iPhone and iPad | Screenshots, interface images, text and diagrams |
| Browser support | Safari 17 and later; other browsers need a decoder | Every browser and app |
Browsers other than Safari cannot read HEIC, so the tool decodes it with a WebAssembly decoder that loads the first time a HEIC file is added.
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has no effect. Expect larger files than the source, especially for photos.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The HEIC files are decoded and saved as PNG in your browser. They stay on your device.
