Web Scraping
What web scraping is, how it relates to screenshot capture, and legal and ethical considerations.
Web scraping is the automated extraction of data from web pages. A scraper downloads pages, parses the HTML or the rendered DOM, and pulls out specific fields such as product names, prices, dates or contact details, then saves them in a structured format like CSV or JSON.
Simple scrapers fetch HTML with an HTTP library and parse it with selectors. Sites that build content with JavaScript need a headless browser, such as one controlled by Playwright or Puppeteer, to render the page first. Some scrapers capture screenshots and run OCR when the data exists only as an image. Whether scraping is allowed depends on the site's terms, copyright, database rights and personal data law, which vary by country. This entry is general information, not legal advice.
Scraping vs crawling vs screenshot capture
| Output | Purpose | |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | List of URLs | Discover pages |
| Scraping | Structured data | Extract fields |
| Screenshot capture | Images | Record how pages look |
Screenshots keep the visual context, such as layout and styling, that scraped data loses.
Where web scraping is used
- Price and stock monitoring.
- Research datasets from public pages.
- Aggregating listings such as jobs or events.
- Migrating content from an old site.
How web scraping works
- Get the URLs, from a list or a crawler.
- Fetch each page, rendering JavaScript if needed.
- Select elements with CSS selectors or XPath.
- Clean and validate the values.
- Store results and schedule repeat runs.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring terms of service,
robots.txtor API alternatives. - Collecting personal data without a lawful basis.
- Sending requests too fast and getting blocked.
- Writing fragile selectors that break with a layout change.
Taking the same screenshots again and again?
When the goal is a visual record rather than data fields, Temposhot Website Capture saves images of a URL list on your Mac with Block ads and Block trackers on by default. See website screenshot automation.
Common questions
Is web scraping legal?
It depends on the site, the data and the jurisdiction. Public pages are not automatically free to reuse.
Can I extract text from a screenshot?
Yes, with OCR. The Extract Text from Image reads text from an image in the browser.
