Screenshot Stitching

How screenshot stitching combines overlapping captures into one image, vs native full-page capture, and common pitfalls.

Screenshot stitching combines several screenshots into a single image. The most common case is vertical: a page or list is captured one screen at a time while scrolling, and the parts are joined in order. Horizontal stitching places captures side by side, for example two app states or a wide table.

Stitching works on any content that can be scrolled and captured, including native apps, chat histories and document viewers. The result is one tall or wide image that can be reviewed, annotated or turned into a PDF as a single file.

How stitching works

  1. Capture the first screen.
  2. Scroll by less than one screen height, so neighboring captures overlap.
  3. Repeat until the end of the content.
  4. Find the rows of pixels that appear in both neighbors and join the images at that point.

Simple stitching places images edge to edge without matching. Overlap-aware stitching avoids duplicated or missing lines.

Stitching vs native full-page capture

A browser can render a whole web page into one image without scrolling, as Playwright and Puppeteer do with their full-page option. That avoids seams but works only for web pages and can break layouts that depend on the viewport height. Stitching works anywhere but depends on clean overlaps and stable content.

Where stitching is used

  • Long web pages, chats and feeds.
  • Spreadsheets and tables wider than the screen.
  • Settings panels and forms with many sections.
  • Side-by-side before and after images.

Common mistakes

  • Sticky headers and floating buttons repeated in every segment.
  • Animations or lazy-loaded images changing between captures, which breaks the overlap.
  • Scrolling by more than one screen and leaving gaps.
  • Producing an image so tall that some viewers downscale it heavily.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?

For web pages in Chrome, the Temposhot Chrome extension scrolls the active page, stitches the viewports at Retina resolution on your computer, and downloads one PNG. Website Capture Full page captures a URL list without manual scrolling.

Common questions

How do I stitch screenshots I already have?

Open them in the Stitch Screenshots, set the order, and download one image.

Is a stitched image lower quality?

No. The pixels come from the original captures. Quality only drops if the result is resized or saved as a low-quality JPEG.
