Action Capture recording clicks in another app as ordered steps

Temposhot and Folge solve the same core problem in a similar way. Both are desktop apps that capture a screenshot for each step of a task, keep the guide on your computer and export it as a document. The differences sit in platform support, capture options, editor tools, export formats and the other capture jobs each app covers.

This comparison is written by the team behind Temposhot. It describes Folge only through its well-known features, and it points to Folge's site for anything that may have changed.

Choose by platform

Platform settles the question for many teams. Folge runs on Mac and Windows. Temposhot runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, and there is no Intel or Windows build.

If anyone on the documentation team writes guides on Windows, Folge keeps everyone in one tool. If everyone uses a recent Mac, read on.

Compare capture control

Temposhot's Action Capture starts with Choose Capture Target: Active Window, Full Screen, Specific Window or Capture Area. It saves the target just before each accepted click, so each image shows the control the reader should click.

Click handling is configurable. Capture every click, only clicks with a modifier key, all clicks except those with a modifier, or no clicks and only the manual shortcut (Shift+Command+2 by default). For Specific Window and Capture Area, Capture outside clicks decides whether clicks elsewhere count. A floating toolbar offers Pause capture, Capture now and Finish capture.

Folge also records a screenshot per click while you work. Check its site for its current capture targets and options.

Compare editing and guide structure

In Temposhot, finishing a run opens a Document in the editor. Each page has a title and a description. Titles come from the template Click "[[element-name]]" when Parse clicked elements finds the control, and Click here when it does not. You can rename the templates, edit any title, and reorder or delete pages. The editor autosaves.

Folge organizes guides as steps with text and images and is designed around this same document model. Compare both editors on a guide of 15 to 20 steps, because reordering and retitling are where time goes.

Compare annotation tools

Temposhot's editor tools are Select, Pan, Text, Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, Arrow and Framing for everyone, plus Blur, Click Marker and Step Numbers with Pro. Framing zooms a page around the clicked point at five levels from Wide to Tight, without changing the source image. Cursor overlays and click markers from capture stay editable.

Folge includes annotation tools for marking up each step. See screenshot annotation for what readers need from markup in either app.

Compare export and delivery

Temposhot exports a Document as a PDF, as PNG, JPG or WebP pages, or as a ZIP package with rendered PNG pages and a document.json file. With Pro, the PDF dialog sets paper size, orientation, cover page, step numbers, page numbers, description placement and image quality, with a live preview. Temposhot does not export Word, HTML or Markdown.

Folge exports to several document formats. If your knowledge base needs a specific format, confirm it on Folge's site. Details on Temposhot output are in the document export guide.

Compare plan fit without relying on a fixed price

Temposhot is a free download. Pro is $39 lifetime for 1 Mac, $109 lifetime for 3 Macs, or $12 per month for 3 Macs, with a 14-day money-back guarantee. Pro adds Blur, Click Marker and Step Numbers, PDF dialog customization and continuing Action Capture past the free step limit.

For Folge, check the current pricing page. Compare how many computers one purchase covers, whether updates are included, and whether the plan covers both Mac and Windows.
