Can You Download Kindle Books as PDF? Official Options on Mac
Check whether a Kindle purchase has Amazon's official EPUB or PDF download, what offline access means, and how to save notes without bypassing DRM.

Searching for "Kindle to PDF" usually means one of several different goals: reading on a plane, keeping a book for years, or printing a few pages for a seminar. Each goal has a different official answer. Most Kindle books are licensed for reading in Amazon's apps and devices and carry DRM, and Temposhot does not remove DRM or open protected book files.
Three different things people call a Kindle download
The word "download" covers three separate results:
- An offline copy in the Kindle app. The book is stored inside the app on your Mac and opens without a connection. It is not a PDF and does not open in other apps.
- A portable file from Amazon. For some titles, the publisher allows a DRM-free EPUB or PDF download from your Amazon account. This file opens in other readers.
- A PDF you make from visible pages. Screen captures of pages, combined into one file. This is appropriate only for material you have the right to copy.
Knowing which one you need saves time. Most readers only need the first.
Check for Amazon's official EPUB or PDF download
Publishers decide whether a Kindle title can be downloaded as a portable file. Where they allow it, the option appears with the book in your Amazon content library.
- Sign in to your Amazon account in a browser and open the content and devices page.
- Find the book and open its actions menu.
- Look for a download option that names a file format such as EPUB or PDF.
If you see only options for sending the book to a Kindle device or app, the title has no portable download. Menu names change, so Amazon's help pages are the reference for the current layout.
Read a Kindle book offline on a Mac
The Kindle app for Mac downloads books into its own storage. Open the app, find the title in your library and download it. Then turn off Wi-Fi and open the book once to confirm it works.
Downloaded books stay readable while the license is active and the app remains signed in. If a download fails, check the device list in your Amazon account. Device and download rules vary by title and region.
What changes for Kindle Unlimited and borrowed books
Kindle Unlimited titles and library loans are borrowed, not bought. When the loan or subscription ends, the downloaded copy stops opening. No portable download is offered for borrowed titles, and screenshots of a borrowed book are not a way to keep it.
Your own highlights and notes may stay in your account after a loan ends, but this is not guaranteed for every title. Export them while the loan is active.
Save highlights and notes instead of the whole book
For study, your highlights are usually the part worth keeping. The Kindle app shows them in a notebook view, and Amazon's web reader lists them by book. Depending on the app, you can copy, export or share them.
Publishers can limit how much highlighted text leaves the book, so long passages may be shortened. Your own typed notes are your work. For other readers, see export online textbook highlights and notes.
Can you use screenshots instead?
Screenshots fit a narrow set of cases: personal documents you sent to Kindle, public domain titles, or pages a publisher's terms let you copy for private study. Read the book's terms and Amazon's conditions of use first.
For permitted pages, the built-in Kindle preset in Auto Capture uses 20 screenshots, a 500 ms interval, the Right Arrow key and a 3 s countdown. Key press automation is part of Temposhot Pro.

Apply the preset
Open Auto Capture with Command+1 and select Kindle. Applying a preset clears the source, so choose the source next.
Choose the source
Select the Kindle window on the Windows tab, or use Custom Area to frame only the page.
Match the page count
Set Screenshots to the number of permitted pages, select Start Capture, and click the Kindle window during the countdown.
Export
Clear any repeated frames in the results pane, then choose PDF. The export runs OCR.
Why a screenshot PDF is different from an ebook
A capture PDF is a set of page images. Text does not reflow, font size is fixed, and links and the table of contents do not work. The OCR text layer makes it a searchable PDF, but recognition is never perfect.
An official EPUB or PDF keeps real text and structure. When a portable download exists, use it instead of a screenshot-to-PDF file.
A practical decision checklist
- Reading offline only: download the book in the Kindle app.
- Need a file for another reader: look for the publisher's EPUB or PDF download.
- Book is borrowed: read it within the loan and export your notes.
- Need your study notes: use the notebook view.
- Need pages you may copy, and no download exists: capture only those pages for personal use.
- Need the whole book outside Kindle: buy a DRM-free or print edition.
FAQ
Does Temposhot remove Kindle DRM?
No. Temposhot records the screen only and does not open, convert or decrypt book files.
Can I convert the files in the Kindle app's folder to PDF?
No. Those files are stored for the Kindle app only. Use Amazon's download option when the publisher offers one.
Why are my Kindle captures black?
Check that Temposhot has Screen Recording permission in System Settings. If permission is on and frames are still blank, the content is protected from capture.
Does the Kindle preset work in other readers?
Yes. It works in any reader that turns pages with the Right Arrow key.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Download Temposhot and follow save ebook pages as a PDF on Mac to turn permitted pages into one searchable file. The capture presets guide explains how to save your own page-turn setup.
