How to Save Online Recipes as PDFs on Mac (No More Lost Recipes)

Stop losing your favorite recipes to broken links and dead blogs. Save online recipes as clean, searchable PDFs on your Mac using automated screenshots.

Recipe blogs shut down, change their URLs or rewrite a recipe without notice. A bookmark then leads to a 404 page or a different ingredient list. Saving the recipes you cook as PDFs on your Mac keeps them readable offline, on a tablet in the kitchen, or printed.

Choose print, Reader Mode, or screenshots

Most recipe pages have three layers: a long story, a recipe card with ingredients and steps, and ads in between. Pick the method by what you want to keep.

Safari Reader, then print to PDFText and main photosYou want the story too, without ads

Start with the recipe card's own print button. Many recipe plugins add one, and it produces a clean one-page layout. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog instead of printing on paper.

If there is no print button, try Safari Reader with Shift+Command+R, then Command+P. Reader removes ads and sidebars, but it sometimes drops ingredient lists that sit in widgets.

Method 1: capture the recipe card

When the print layout misses quantities or squeezes the steps, capture the card itself.

  1. Show the whole card

Scroll so the recipe card fills the window. Zoom out with Command+Minus if the card is taller than the screen.

  2. Select the area

In Temposhot, press Command+1, choose Custom Area, and draw the frame around the card. Turn on Lock aspect only if you want a fixed shape.

  3. Capture

Set Stop condition to Screenshots with a value of 1, select Start Auto Capture, and wait for the countdown.

  4. Export

In the results pane, select PDF. The export adds OCR text, so ingredient names are searchable.

For a card taller than one screen, set Screenshots to 2 or 3 and record Page Down as the Key press, so each frame shows the next part of the card. Key press automation requires Temposhot Pro.

Method 2: capture the full recipe page

Step photos are often the most useful part of a baking or technique recipe. To keep them, capture the whole page.

One recipe in your browser. The Temposhot extension for Chrome scrolls the page, stitches it locally at Retina resolution, and downloads one PNG. Cut it into page-sized parts with the Split Image and combine them with the Image to PDF.

A list of recipes. Collect the URLs, open Website Capture with Command+2, and paste them with Bulk insert. Choose Full page, keep Block ads and Block trackers on, and set the wait to Network idle with a 2-second delay so step photos load. After the run, export the session as PDF to get one page per recipe.

Recipe pages with many photos rely on lazy loading. If images are blank, raise the delay on that row and retry it.

Organize the recipe archive

A folder per category and a consistent file name keep a growing collection usable:

  • Recipes/Baking/Sourdough loaf - Site name.pdf
  • Recipes/Weeknight/Lemon pasta - Site name.pdf

To build a cookbook, combine several PDFs with the Merge PDF, then reorder or remove pages with the PDF Page Organizer. Temposhot Documents offers another route: create a document from the screenshots, reorder the pages, and export it as one PDF. The Documents overview explains the editor.

Because the PDFs include OCR text, Spotlight finds a recipe by an ingredient such as "tahini" as well as by its title.

Improve the recipe PDF

  1. Dismiss pop-ups before capturing. Newsletter and cookie prompts cover the card.
  2. Use the metric or US toggle on the card first if the site offers one.
  3. Scale the servings on the card before saving, if the site supports it.
  4. Add notes. Open the capture in Documents and add a text box with your own changes, such as less sugar or a longer bake.
  5. Keep the source. Put the site name in the file name so you can find the original.
  6. Shrink large files with the Compress PDF before syncing to a phone.

FAQ

Why does the print version miss the photos?

Recipe card print layouts often drop images to fit one page. Use a screenshot method when the photos matter.

Can I search my recipe PDFs by ingredient?

Yes. Browser PDFs keep native text, and Temposhot PDF exports add recognized text through OCR.

How do I get rid of ads in the saved recipe?

Use the recipe card's print button or Safari Reader. In Website Capture, keep Block ads on.

Save the recipe

Pick the recipe you cook most often, press the card's print button, and save it as PDF. If anything is missing, capture the card with Custom Area and compare.

Working with pages you are allowed to save?

Temposhot captures pages and windows on your Mac and exports them as searchable PDFs. See save screenshots as PDF on Mac or download the app.
