How to Fix Missing or Duplicate Pages in an eTextbook PDF
Find whether the problem came from the official export, page numbering, incomplete loading, or a permitted screenshot sequence, then rebuild only the affected range.

A saved etextbook PDF skips from page 41 to 44, or shows page 57 twice. Before rebuilding anything, find where the gap came from. The cause decides the fix, and in most cases only a short range needs redoing.
Do not confuse PDF index with textbook page number
A PDF viewer counts pages from 1 at the first page of the file. The textbook prints its own page numbers, which can start with roman numerals or skip blank pages. A 20-page PDF of chapter 3 might hold printed pages 61 to 80.
Compare the printed page number on each page, not the viewer's count. Many apparent gaps disappear once you do. Also check for blank pages and two-page spreads, which shift the count without losing content.
If the PDF came from the reader's official export
Readers with Save to PDF or Self-Print features output exactly the pages you selected. Missing pages usually mean:
- The selected range ended earlier than intended.
- The print allowance ran out partway, so the reader stopped.
- The publisher excludes some pages, such as certain images, from printing.
Check the remaining allowance shown in the reader, then save only the missing pages if the allowance covers them.
If the PDF came from browser Print
Printing a web reader from the browser often loses pages. The browser prints only what has loaded, so pages the reader loads as you scroll may come out blank or missing. Layouts can also break across sheets.
Use the reader's own print command instead where it exists. The post on print to PDF breaking online textbook layout explains why browser printing struggles with these readers.
If the PDF came from permitted screenshots
Page-by-page capture produces gaps and duplicates for timing reasons. In Temposhot's Auto Capture, each cycle saves a screenshot, sends the key press, then waits for the interval.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Same page twice | Page turn slower than the interval | Raise the interval from 500 ms to 1 second |
| Half-rendered page | Page still loading at capture time | Raise the interval; wait for the first page to load fully |
| Skipped page | Reader turned two pages for one key | Use single-page view |
| Run stopped early | Screenshot count too low | Set Screenshots to the exact page count |
| No pages turned | Key press went to another window | Click the reader during the countdown |

Rebuild only the affected range
Note the range
Write down the first and last printed page numbers that need replacing.
Recapture or re-export
For permitted captures, go to the first missing page, apply the Kindle preset (20 screenshots, 500 ms, Right Arrow, 3 s countdown), adjust the interval and set Screenshots to the size of the range. Select the source again, since the preset clears it.
Clean the frames
In the results pane, clear any duplicate frames and choose PDF.
Insert the pages
Open the original PDF in PDF Page Organizer, remove the faulty pages and insert the new ones. Or combine files in order with Merge PDF.
You can also select Create Document, which opens the frames as pages you can reorder or delete in the editor. The Documents pages and imports guide covers adding and removing pages.
Verify with thumbnails and content landmarks
Open the repaired PDF in Preview and choose View then Thumbnails. Scroll the sidebar and check:
- Printed page numbers run in order with no repeats.
- Chapter openings and section headings appear where the table of contents says.
- Figures and tables sit on the pages their captions reference.
- The last page ends where the next page in the book begins.
Search for a heading from the middle of the range. In a searchable PDF, the search confirms the page is present.
Keep a simple QA log
A short log prevents repeat work:
- Source of the PDF: reader export, browser print or capture session.
- Printed page range covered.
- Pages replaced, and when.
- Settings that worked, such as the interval and key.
Save working capture settings as a preset with Save Current Setup, as shown in the capture presets guide.
FAQ
Why does the PDF say 20 pages when I expected 22?
Check the printed numbers. Blank pages or spreads in the book can explain the difference.
Can I delete duplicates before exporting?
Yes. Clear their checkboxes in the results pane, then export only the selected frames.
Should I rerun the whole capture?
Rarely. Rebuild only the faulty range and insert it.
