Kortext is a digital textbook platform used by many universities, often supplying core reading for a course. You can read in a browser, download books for offline reading in Kortext's apps, export your notes, and print a limited number of pages per title. Each of these has its own rules, and the figures for your title appear in the reader.

What Kortext provides

Kortext provides access to textbooks through your institution or a personal purchase. Features you can expect to find, depending on the title and your institution's setup:

  • Online reading in a browser.
  • Offline reading in the Kortext desktop and mobile apps.
  • Highlights, notes and bookmarks that sync across devices.
  • Notes export and reference tools for citations.
  • Printing within a publisher-set allowance.
  • Read Aloud on supported devices.

Your library pages usually explain which of these your institution enables.

Download a Kortext book for offline reading

  1. Install the app

Install the Kortext app for your Mac, iPad or phone from Kortext's site or your device's app store. Sign in with the account your institution set up.

  2. Download from the bookshelf

Open your bookshelf and choose the download option on each book you need offline.

  3. Test it

Turn off Wi-Fi, reopen the app and open the book. Check a chapter with figures.

Downloaded books stay inside the Kortext app and are not PDF files. They remain readable while your access to the title is active.

Sync annotations before removing a download

Notes and highlights made offline are stored on that device until the app reconnects. Before you remove a download, sign out, or move to a new computer, connect to Wi-Fi and let the app sync. Then check that recent notes appear in the browser reader.

Removing a download before syncing can lose offline annotations.

Export notes and references

Kortext's notes view lets you review your highlights and notes for a book. Where export is offered for your title, use it to save your study work to a file. Add the book's title, edition and ISBN at the top so page references stay useful for citations.

The reader's reference tools can produce a citation for the book in common styles. Copy the citation into your notes file at the same time.

Publishers set a print allowance for each title. Kortext shows the allowance, and how much you have used, when you open the print option. The amount varies by publisher and title, so plan with the figure shown in your account.

To get a PDF on a Mac, print within the allowance and choose PDF and then Save as PDF in the macOS print dialog. Select pages carefully, because reprints usually count again.

Use Read Aloud on a Mac or another supported device

Read Aloud reads the book's text with a synthetic voice. Support depends on the title's format and the device. If Kortext's Read Aloud is unavailable for a title on your Mac, macOS also has built-in Spoken Content in System Settings under Accessibility, which can read selected text in many apps.

For accessible formats beyond these, contact your disability services office.

Troubleshooting

  • No download option. The title or your institution's setup may not include offline reading.
  • Print option greyed out. The allowance is used up, or the publisher does not allow printing.
  • Annotations missing on another device. The first device has not synced. Open the app online.
  • Book removed from the bookshelf. Course or institution access may have ended. Ask your library.
  • Printed PDF text does not select. Some print output contains page images. See why you cannot select text in a saved etextbook PDF.

Keep textbook output within Kortext's controls

Kortext's print, copy and export features are the approved way to take content out of the reader. Use them first, and treat their limits as part of the license.

Temposhot captures only what is visible on screen and cannot capture content that a reader app blocks. It suits your own material, such as a notes view, or content your institution confirms you may capture. For those, use Auto Capture with a Windows or Custom Area source, then export PDF for a searchable PDF. The capture sources guide explains each source.
