Can You Download a VitalSource Bookshelf Textbook as a PDF?

VitalSource books download for offline reading inside Bookshelf, not as portable PDFs. Follow the official route and understand the extraction restriction.

VitalSource Bookshelf lets you download textbooks for offline reading, which leads many students to expect a PDF file somewhere on their Mac. There is none. The download lives inside Bookshelf, and VitalSource's terms restrict extracting the content into other formats.

What the official policy says

VitalSource distributes books as licenses to read in its Bookshelf apps and web reader. Its help pages describe offline reading inside Bookshelf, not a downloadable PDF, and its terms of use restrict copying, extracting or converting book content beyond what the reader's own features allow.

Two features do allow content outside the reader, within limits set per title:

  • Print, for pages the publisher allows.
  • Copy, for short passages where the publisher allows it.

Everything else stays inside Bookshelf. Read the current terms in your VitalSource account, because they are the reference for your title.

How to read a VitalSource book offline

  1. Install Bookshelf

Install the Bookshelf app for Mac, iPad or phone from VitalSource's site or your device's app store. Sign in with the account that holds your books.

  2. Download the title

In your library, select the book and choose the download option. Stay online until it finishes.

  3. Open it once online

Open the book and page through a chapter so the app confirms your license.

  4. Test offline

Turn off Wi-Fi, quit Bookshelf, reopen it and open the book again.

Bookshelf may need to go online from time to time to refresh licenses. How often varies, so open the app online before a long trip.

Where the offline book is stored

Bookshelf stores downloaded books in its own app data on your Mac. The files are encrypted for Bookshelf and do not open in Preview, Books or any other app. Copying the folder to another Mac does not work either; download the book there through Bookshelf instead.

To free space, remove the download from inside Bookshelf. The book stays in your library.

When the official Print option is available

When the publisher allows printing, Bookshelf shows a Print command and the number of pages you can print. The allowance is set per title and can differ between books from the same publisher. On a Mac, choose PDF in the print dialog to save the printed pages as a file.

If the Print command is missing, the publisher does not allow printing for that title. The printed output is still governed by the license, so keep it for personal study.

If you need notes outside Bookshelf

Your highlights and notes appear in Bookshelf's notebook view. Where the reader offers export, print or share for notes, use it to keep your study work. Do this well before your access ends.

The post on exporting online textbook highlights and notes walks through checking and completing an export.

If you require a portable or accessible file

If you need the text in another format because of a disability, ask your institution's disability services office. They can request accessible formats from publishers through approved channels. Bookshelf itself supports features such as reflowable text and read-aloud on many titles.

If you simply want a file you can keep, look for a DRM-free or print edition from the publisher.

Where Temposhot does and does not fit

Temposhot fits material you have the right to capture:

  • Your own notebook view, for a personal study PDF.
  • Open textbooks and course materials your instructor shares for capture.
  • Figures your instructor has cleared for a presentation.

For those, select the window on the Windows tab or draw a Custom Area in Auto Capture, then export PDF for a searchable PDF.

Troubleshooting official offline access

  • Book will not download. Check free disk space and sign out and back in to Bookshelf.
  • Book asks to go online. The license needs a refresh. Connect and open it once.
  • Book missing from library. A rental or course access may have ended. Check your account.
  • Print count lower than expected. Allowances count every printed page, including reprints.

FAQ

Can I find the PDF in Finder after downloading?

No. Bookshelf stores encrypted files that only the app opens.

Can I print the whole book?

Only if the title's print allowance covers it. Most allowances cover part of a book.

Does the print allowance reset?

That depends on the publisher. The count shown in Bookshelf is the reliable figure.

Working with pages you are allowed to save?

Download Temposhot to turn your notebook view or other permitted material into a searchable PDF. The export formats guide explains each output.
