How Can I Read an Online Textbook Without Internet?

Prepare an online textbook for a flight, commute, or weak connection using the reader's official offline mode, then test access before you leave.

Most online textbooks can be read without internet, but only after some preparation while you still have a connection. The reliable route is the reader's own offline mode, set up and tested before you leave.

This post is a five-step routine for a flight, a commute or a placement with weak signal, plus what to do if offline reading is not offered.

First, find out where offline reading works

Offline support is often limited to certain apps. A platform may support offline reading in its phone and tablet apps but not in a Mac browser, or the reverse. Look in the platform's help center for a page on offline reading, and in the book's information panel for an offline or download option.

Write down which of your devices can hold an offline copy. That decides which device you carry.

Step 1: confirm access before downloading

Open your account and check:

  • The access end date for the title. A rental ending during your trip ends offline access too.
  • That the book opens normally online.
  • That the title itself allows offline reading. Publishers set this per book.

Step 2: install the supported app

Install the platform's official app from the App Store or the vendor's site, and sign in with the same account you used to buy or activate the book. School-supplied books may need sign-in through your institution.

Update the app before you travel. An outdated version may refuse to open until it updates, which needs a connection.

Step 3: download what you actually need

Offline copies use storage, and some platforms limit how many titles you can hold at once.

  • Download the chapters for the coming days if the app offers chapter downloads.
  • Include supplements you need, such as a glossary or answer appendix, if they are separate.
  • Leave video and audio out unless you need them, since they are large.

Step 4: open and sync before going offline

Open each downloaded book once while connected. Let it sync highlights and notes from your other devices. Some readers also confirm your license during this step, which resets the time you can stay offline. The length of that period varies; your reader's help pages state it.

Step 5: run a real offline test

  1. Disconnect

Turn on airplane mode, or turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data.

  2. Restart the app

Quit the app fully and open it again. A running app can hide problems.

  3. Read and annotate

Open each book, jump to a later chapter, view a figure and add a highlight.

  4. Note what fails

Anything that does not load now will not load on the trip.

Know which features may still need internet

Even with a full offline copy, these often need a connection:

  • Embedded videos, audio and interactive figures.
  • Homework, quizzes and practice tools linked to the book.
  • Search across your whole library.
  • Syncing notes to other devices.

Plan to do those tasks before you leave or after you return.

If the official download button is missing

The title or device does not support offline reading. Options within the terms:

  1. Try the platform's other app, such as the tablet version.
  2. Use the print allowance for the pages you need. The allowance appears in the reader or your account.
  3. Check your library for a chapter download of the same book.
  4. Ask your instructor whether a handout covers the material.

The post on why the offline copy is not in Downloads helps if you downloaded but cannot find the book.

When a portable file is genuinely necessary

Some situations need a file: a placement with no device allowed for the reader app, or an accessibility tool that reads only PDFs. Ask the publisher or your disability services office first. Accessible or downloadable editions are often available on request.

For material you are allowed to copy, such as your own notes or open-licensed chapters, Temposhot can capture visible pages and export a searchable PDF on your Mac. The ebook pages to PDF tutorial shows the setup.

Offline travel checklist

  • Access end date checked.
  • App installed and updated on the device you will carry.
  • Books and supplements downloaded.
  • Each book opened and synced while online.
  • Airplane-mode test passed after restarting the app.
  • Charger packed.
