How to Save Slack, Discord & iMessage Conversations as PDFs on Mac
Archive important Slack, Discord, and iMessage conversations as searchable PDFs on your Mac. Capture chat history before it disappears behind message limits or deleted servers.

Chat apps are where decisions, receipts and personal moments end up, but they are poor archives. Workspaces have retention rules, servers get deleted, and phones get replaced. A PDF of the conversations that matter keeps them readable outside the app. This post covers the built-in export options first, then a screenshot method that works with any chat window on a Mac.
Choose what to archive
Archive the conversation, not the whole account. A focused PDF is easier to find, to redact and to share later.
| Purpose | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Project decision record | The thread where the decision was made, plus linked files |
| Customer or vendor agreement | The messages that state terms, dates and amounts |
| Personal keepsake | The conversation for a period, such as a trip |
| Evidence of a problem | The full exchange with timestamps visible |
Check first whether the app offers its own export. Slack lets workspace owners and admins export data, with the scope depending on the plan. Discord lets each user request a copy of their own data from privacy settings. These exports produce data files, not readable pages, and they often include far more than one conversation. For a single readable conversation, screenshots are the more practical route.
Capture a Slack conversation
Find the start
Open the channel or thread in the Slack desktop app or a browser. Scroll up to the first message you want to keep.
Set Auto Capture
Press Command+1. Set Stop condition to Screenshots, set Interval to 1 second, and record Page Down as the Key press.
Frame the messages
Choose Custom Area and draw it around the message list, leaving out the sidebar.
Start
Select Start Auto Capture. Click inside the message list during the countdown so Slack receives the key presses.
Starting at the oldest message and paging down keeps the frames in reading order. For a thread, open it in the side panel and draw the area around the panel instead. Key press automation requires Temposhot Pro.
Capture a Discord conversation
Discord works the same way. Scroll to the first message, then capture the channel area with Page Down as the key. Close the member list first, so the message column is wider and needs fewer frames.
Discord loads older history in chunks as you scroll up. Scroll all the way to the starting point before you begin, and wait for the messages to settle. Server owners can delete channels at any time, so capture important channels while you still have access.
Capture an iMessage conversation
Messages on the Mac has no command that exports a whole conversation as a PDF. Open the conversation, scroll up to the starting message, and use Auto Capture with a Windows source on the Messages window. Page Down moves through the transcript when the message list has focus.
For conversations synced through iCloud, older messages may take a moment to load as you scroll. Run a short test with 3 screenshots before the full capture.
Privacy and redaction
Chats contain other people's words, phone numbers and sometimes photos. Before a PDF leaves your Mac, remove what the reader does not need.
Other rules to keep in mind:
- Workplace chats may be covered by company policy. Ask before exporting work conversations.
- Some jurisdictions restrict sharing private messages without consent.
- To lock a sensitive PDF, add a password with the Protect PDF, which uses AES-256 encryption.
Temposhot runs locally, so captures stay on your Mac. It cannot capture apps or windows that block screen capture.
Organize the chat archive
- One PDF per conversation or per date range.
- File names with app, channel or contact, and dates:
2026-09-11 Slack #launch - pricing decision.pdf. - A folder per app:
Chats/Slack,Chats/Discord,Chats/Messages. - Combined files for a project with the Merge PDF.
The PDF export from the results pane includes OCR text, so Spotlight can find a conversation by a phrase someone wrote.
Improve the chat captures
- Widen the window so long messages wrap less.
- Turn off link previews in the app if they push messages apart.
- Raise the interval to 2 seconds if images or reactions are still loading when frames save.
- Remove duplicates at the end by unchecking them in the results pane before export.
- Add context. Open the frames in Documents and add a text note on the first page explaining what the conversation shows.
- Reorder if needed. If you captured upward from the newest message, reverse the pages with the PDF Page Organizer.
FAQ
Can I export a Slack channel to PDF directly?
Slack's own exports produce data files rather than formatted pages, and access depends on your role and plan. Check Slack's help center for the current options.
Will timestamps appear in the PDF?
Only if they are visible on screen. Hover-only timestamps do not appear, so enable full timestamps in the app's settings if it offers them.
Can I search the saved PDF?
Yes. Temposhot adds OCR text on PDF export. Recognition of names and emoji can be imperfect, so check key passages.
Is a screenshot PDF valid as evidence?
That depends on the setting and jurisdiction. Keep timestamps visible, do not edit message content, and ask a professional when a record matters legally.
Save the conversation
Pick one conversation you would not want to lose, scroll to its first message, and run a 3-frame test with Page Down. Once the frames look right, run the full capture and export it as PDF.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Temposhot captures any visible window on your Mac and exports searchable PDFs, with nothing uploaded. See save screenshots as PDF on Mac and the automated capture guide.
