Retina Screenshot
What a Retina screenshot is, why it's 2x the expected size, and how to handle high-DPI captures.
A Retina screenshot is an image captured on a Mac with a Retina display, Apple's name for screens with high pixel density. macOS lays out the interface in points and renders each point with a 2×2 block of pixels on these displays. Screenshots record the actual pixels, so the image dimensions are twice the screen size in points.
A MacBook set to a "looks like" resolution of 1440×900 produces full-screen screenshots of 2880×1800 pixels. macOS also tags these files at 144 pixels per inch rather than 72, which some apps read as a hint to show them at half size.
Why Retina screenshots are larger
Doubling the width and height multiplies the pixel count by four. A 1000×600 point window becomes a 2000×1200 pixel image. File size grows with the pixel count, and the exact increase depends on the content and format.
Where it matters
- Documentation and print, where 2x detail keeps text sharp.
- OCR, which reads larger glyphs more reliably.
- Web pages and tickets, where a 2x image can appear twice as large as expected in tools that ignore the PPI tag.
- App store and social uploads with fixed pixel requirements.
How to control capture resolution
- Keep the 2x original as the master file.
- Downscale to 50% for 1x delivery with an image editor or the Preview Adjust Size command.
- For web pages, set the device scale factor in automation tools instead of resizing afterward.
- Check the result with the Screenshot Resolution Checker.
Temposhot saves screen captures at the display's native pixel resolution. The Chrome extension stitches full-page captures at Retina resolution.
Common mistakes
- Treating the 144 PPI tag as extra detail; only the pixel count matters.
- Upscaling a 1x capture to fake a 2x image.
- Mixing 1x and 2x frames in one document, which produces uneven page sizes.
Taking the same screenshots again and again?
Temposhot Auto Capture saves every frame at the same native resolution for the whole run. See capture sources.
Common questions
Why is my Mac screenshot twice the size?
The display renders each point with four pixels, and the screenshot keeps all of them.
Can I take a 1x screenshot on a Retina Mac?
Not with the built-in shortcuts. Capture at 2x and downscale by 50%.

Taking the same screenshots again and again?
Temposhot captures a screen, window or area on a timer and exports the set as a PDF, images, ZIP or MP4. The free browser tools fix single images.
