When to Use Full-Page Screenshots vs PDF Exports
A full-page screenshot gives you one tall image; a PDF export gives you searchable pages. See which format fits archives, reports, and sharing.

A web page can be saved as one tall image or as a paginated PDF. Both keep the content, but they behave differently once the file leaves the browser. The right choice depends on whether the reader needs to see the layout exactly, search the text, or print it.
What Each Format Is
A full-page screenshot is a single raster image of the whole scrollable page. The width matches the browser window, and the height grows with the page, often to 10,000 pixels or more. Every pixel is recorded as rendered, including fonts, images and colors.
A PDF export from the browser comes from the print engine. The browser lays the page out again for paper, applies the site's print stylesheet if it has one, and splits the result into pages. Text usually stays as real text, so it can be selected, searched and copied, and links often keep working.
The difference is in what drives the result. A screenshot records the screen. A browser PDF re-renders the page for print.
When a full-page screenshot wins
- Exact visual record. Design reviews, bug reports and before-and-after comparisons need the page as it looked on screen, not as it prints.
- Pages with weak print styles. Many sites hide images, collapse layouts or drop backgrounds when printing. A screenshot ignores print rules.
- App-like pages. Dashboards, maps and canvas-based tools often print as blank or broken pages.
- Sharing in chat or slides. One image drops into a message, a ticket or a slide without a PDF viewer.
The drawbacks are size and text. A tall PNG can reach several megabytes. The text is pixels, so searching requires OCR.
When a PDF export wins
- Reading and searching. Selectable text works with search, copy and screen readers.
- Printing. Pages break at paper size instead of one long strip.
- Article archives. Text-heavy pages with a good print stylesheet produce clean, compact files.
- Small files. Text-based PDFs are often much smaller than an image of the same page.
The drawbacks come from re-layout. Sticky headers can repeat on every page, lazy-loaded images may be missing, and some content disappears because the print stylesheet hides it. The PDF shows what the print engine produced, which may not match the screen.
The decision table
| Need | Full-page screenshot | Browser PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Matches the screen exactly | Yes | Often not |
| Selectable, searchable text | Only after OCR | Usually yes |
| Clickable links | No | Usually yes |
| Prints on standard paper | Poorly | Yes |
| Works on dashboards and web apps | Yes | Often fails |
| Easy to paste into chat or slides | Yes | No |
| File size for long text pages | Larger | Smaller |
A quick rule: if someone will look at it, take a screenshot. If someone will read, search or print it, export a PDF.
The hybrid: viewport sequence to paged PDF
A third route combines the visual accuracy of screenshots with the paging of a PDF. Capture the page one screen at a time, then combine the frames into a PDF with one screen per page and OCR text on top.
In Temposhot, Auto Capture does this with a browser window as the source. Set Stop condition to Screenshots, record Page Down or Space as the Key press, and set Interval to 1 second. Each frame saves before the next key press. In the results pane, select PDF to export a searchable PDF with recognized text. Key press automation requires Temposhot Pro.
For a list of URLs, Website Capture can capture each page as Full page and export the session as a PDF, one page per URL. An existing tall screenshot can be cut into page-sized parts with the Split Image, then joined with the Image to PDF. To add a text layer to a screenshot PDF, use the Screenshot to Searchable PDF.
Practical tips before you commit
- Preview the print first. Open the browser's print dialog and scroll through the preview. If it looks right, a browser PDF is the fastest option.
- Turn on background graphics in the print dialog when colors or images are missing.
- Scroll the page once before a full-page capture so lazy-loaded images appear. The lazy loading entry explains why.
- Pick PNG for text-heavy screenshots. JPEG compression blurs small text, which also lowers OCR accuracy.
- Keep both for important records. A screenshot proves how the page looked. A PDF keeps the text easy to search.
FAQ
Can a full-page screenshot be searchable?
Yes, after OCR. Exporting frames as a PDF in Temposhot adds recognized text, and the Extract Text from Image pulls text from a single image.
Why does my browser PDF look different from the page?
The browser re-lays the page for paper and applies the site's print stylesheet. Elements hidden for print, sticky headers and lazy images cause most differences.
Which is better for legal or compliance records?
A screenshot shows exactly what appeared on screen, which is often what a record needs. Many teams also keep a PDF for the text. Check the requirements of whoever will receive the record.
Working with pages you are allowed to save?
Temposhot captures pages as screenshots and exports them as searchable PDFs on your Mac. See save screenshots as PDF on Mac, or compare both routes in Screenshot PDF vs browser Save as PDF.
